COD: Black Ops details

Stephen Totilo, over at Kotaku wrote about his imprerssions of COD: Black Ops, calling the visuals “terrific” and the game reminiscent of COD: World At War’s “emotionally dark” story.
Also, he wrote this:
“…the new game’s campaign is single-player only. (Co-op is a separate mode, supporting two players on the same system or four players online.) This is not the standard way a solo campaign in a Call of Duty is described, but it seems fitting in a game about Black Ops.”

The rumor that wouldn’t die

This one’s pretty shakey, but still, there’s a glimmer of hope shining from those lifeless zombie eyes.
Killzone 3 trailers
I think some of you guys slept through the awesome game that was Killzone 2. I can understand, though. There’s kind of a glut of FPS games. However, the level of graphic sophistication in Killzone 2 was pretty jaw-dropping at times. The feel of combat is different than COD. There is a “realistic” feeling of weight. You can’t just run around the maps at breakneck speed firing and using melee. You actually “feel” the gear on your back, the kick back of the weapons, and the distance from point A to B. Killzone also features a realistic cover system, extremely lifelike body movements, such as when an enemy crumples under gunfire, realistic heads-up with arms that retract dynamically while sprinting, and latest-gen light, dust, and smoke filters galore.
Killzone 3 is coming and bringing with it some new features like jetpacks, melee kills, and a more diverse environment to run around in. It seems to maintain its battle intensity, though. I heard somewhere that they also cut out the sailor talk from the second one, which I’m a little bit let down by, but I suppose it allows them to reach a slightly broader audience. That’s a dubious condition though, since if you can handle the gratuitous killing, I think you can handle some f-bombs.
Anyway, my curiousity is peaked.
North Korea invades America’s Homefront

Potentially good new war game on the radar, with an interesting new concept. Apparently, the North Koreans have grown to be a force to be reckoned with and are taking America in our weakened state. The game is called Homefront, and I’d say, it’s nice to see some serious competitors to the COD franchise. If the plot sounds familiar, you won’t be surprised to learn that the screenwriter from Red Dawn, John Milius, helped with this script as well.

All the gory details are here.

Just reposting this here so I can find it easier in the future. Funny, because it’s true.

“We’re thrilled to bring something new and fresh to Battlefield: Bad Company 2 while still keeping Battlefield’s signature gameplay intact,” says Patrick Bach, Senior Producer at DICE. “We want to consistently support the over 4 million fans playing the game with new ways to get into multiplayer and also challenge the elite players with new experiences to improve their performance online. Effective squad play is the key to success in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 multiplayer and this new mode will provide players with a dedicated environment to test their team skills and rank against the competition.”

COD: Black Ops 4p co-op confirmed

http://kotaku.com/5535796/call-of-duty-black-ops-has-4+player-co+op
As expected, the upcoming COD will support 2-4p co-op, as did Treyarch’s last game World At War.
In other news, I’m burning out on posting to the void.
COD: Black Ops dated

We have a date, people. Modern Warfare 2 was released 11/10/09, and keeping in the number play, Black Ops is being released 11/09/10.
Further, this product listing came from a major UK retailer, spilling the beans about the plot:
Call of Duty returns this November, but this is a Call of Duty like no other, this is Black Ops.
Now you will witness the birth of the Elite Special Forces and take part in off-the-record missions using unconventional weaponry to get the job done! From Cuba to the Arctic and the jungles of Vietnam, Call of Duty: Black Ops features stunning cinematic graphics and intense gameplay that puts you right at the heart of the action!
This is incidentally right along the lines of the rumors we picked up back when.
The whole to-do over Activision firing and consequently losing up to 26 of their main developers from the Modern Warfare series developer Infinity Ward leaves a bad taste, but as I’m a fan of Treyarch’s treatment of World At War, I will stick with Activision through this game, at least.
Lost Planet 2 Multiplayer Demo

Tomorrow, Thursday the 22nd, alongside the release of the latest Uncharted 2 DLC, the Lost Planet 2 multiplayer demo is being released. According to a writer at Kotaku, it’s already quite popular with many Japanese players. I guess we should give it a shot. It’s free after all.
We had tried the former Lost Planet 2 demo, where several people could collaboratively kill gargantuan lizard/insect/monster things. There’s something I like about the game, but also something that just doesn’t seem special. I don’t think any of us were really that blown away by it. It’s not that the graphics aren’t good. It’s not that the co-op isn’t legit. It’s not that the controls are awkward. It’s not that it’s lacking a distinct style and tone. Maybe it just doesn’t feel like there’s any narrative whatsoever. You are just going around indiscriminately killing all the local flora and fauna you see.
However, this multiplayer demo appears to be more of a mano y mano kind of dealio. Could be worthwhile for a few yucks.
On a side note, Ken, have you tried gaming with any Japanese, yet? I found a community on Mixi for PS3 gamers, and connected with several. I did game with some of them, and it was amusing to make a cultural connection, chatting over the headset. I think the community was PS3フレンド(http://mixi.jp/view_community.pl?id=1569567) or this COD:WAW community (http://mixi.jp/view_community.pl?id=3423353).
Obviously, you will get a ton more out of it, being fluent. The biggest barrier, though, is the time difference, but I found that Saturday is a good day for some international gaming, since it’s still Sunday in Japan, and people are often free to game at all hours. You, or we, should give it a shot. If you pick up World At War at any point, I know some guys that are nuts about Nazi Zombies.
